Nutritional Tip of the Week

What are "Empty Calories"?

Empty calories describe foods high in calories, but low in nutritional values. They also lack the health promoting macro and micro-nutrients.

* Macro-nutrients are carbohydrates, protein, and fat and contain calories.
* Micro-nutrients are all vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber and contain no calories.

Empty calorie foods: Deep fried foods, french fries, candy, soda, all alcoholic beverages, refried grains, crackers, cookies, white rice
Make lateral changes in your diet and cut out certain foods completely!

Avoid fried foods and use other cooking methods. Have a baked potato with the skin, instead of french fries.

Replace refried grains with whole grain products. Have oatmeal instead of processed sweetened cereals.

Snack on fruits, instead of candy.

Avoid sodas and sweetened drinks. Water, water, water!!!!!
