Taking Control

Bahram Saba

Bahram Saba has led an interesting life. Growing up in Iran, immigrating to England as a teenager, and then to the United States as a college student, Bahram has experienced more "life" than most. Always involved in athletics from a young age, Bahram's passion was rugby. Playing for many years, in college and after, he sustained a fair amount of injuries. However, youth, continuing to workout and substantial work activity in construction kept Bahram healthy and functional.

Fast forward twenty years. Youth (ah, those early twenties!) is in the past. Working out has been replaced by family and home responsibilities. Work has become much less active and more directed in nature. Those old athletic injuries have now begun to make themselves known in a very big way. Let's face it. As we get older our lives change. Our priorities change. We spend more time taking care of responsibilities and obligations: financial, children, aging parents, advanced career, and property. The list goes on. It becomes much more challenging to allocate time to all things necessary. We tend to the put the maintenance of ourselves last on the list, never to be accomplished at all. This had become the story of Bahram Saba.
Finding himself in complete disrepair, but still obligated to a very active life, Bahram knew he needed to make some drastic changes. After a failed attempt at relief with doctors and many pain prescriptions later, Bahram was in bad shape. Nerve damage in his neck had resulted in complete atrophy and virtually no use of his left arm. An improperly set broken leg as a child and the compensatory movement patterns and muscular imbalances associated with that injury had caused severe back problems and pain. Two badly separated shoulders, old rugby and skiing injuries, had made it impossible for Bahram to even shave. He was in constant pain.

Bahram enlisted D'Lynne's expertise in a last ditch attempt to become at least somewhat functional. Not expecting much, the first 6 months of his recovery came in the form of rehabilitation. Repairing the current damage and building a foundation for the construction of a healthy body was phase I of D'Lynne's plan. The body is an amazing machine. Even after years of abuse and neglect, methodical, consistent and appropriate rehab and exercise will bring the body back. After two months, as promised, Bahram was pain free. But the work necessary to restore his body back to its former healthy state, took two years. Bahram didn't stop there. After another year of dedicated, four times per week, highly intense workouts with D'Lynne, Bahram's fitness level at age 43 is incredible. He follows a reasonable nutrition plan, with plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and clean protein. His exercise regimen consists of three to four strength training sessions per week, plus running and mountain biking for the cardiorespiratory component. He has gotten back into horseback riding on a regular basis and hopes to compete someday in the International Horse Show.
